Why are large boulders present in steep mountain streams?

    Freeze thaw occurs on the mountain creating large chunks of rock which progress down stream. However a more logical answer would be calving, abrasion and plucking that are processes performed by a glacier removing peices of rock from the mountains. As these melt they form streams, large rocks and boulders would be left behind.
