One of the features that enabled migration from water to land is the development of legs as against fins. While the latter is useful for movement in water, the former is necessary for locomotion on land.

In the late Devonian period, the first group of vertebrates with legs emerged. The tetrapods or four-legged vertebrates were known to have emerged about 330 million years ago and consist of the amphibians, reptiles, and mammals.
