Collagen secretion by fibroblasts is the dominant cellular process that characterizes this phase of the client's healing. At the proliferation phase of healing, the damaged area within the wound is rebuilt with new granulation tissue which is made up of collagen and extracellular matrix secreted by fibroblasts. The colour and condition of the granulation tissue indicates how the wound is healing. Dark granulation tissue indicates infection or poor perfusion while healthy granulation tissue is granular and uneven in texture with pink or red colour.
