The parotid salivary glands are located ventral to the ear and produce nearly half of the total volume of saliva produced. They are the major salivary glands in animals and humans. The parotid gland has four surfaces - superficial or lateral, superior, anteromedial, and posteromedial and receives both sensory and autonomic innervation.
