    The process is called sensation.

Sensation can be defined as a process whereby the sensory receptor cells are activated to detect environmental stimulus. Thus, main function of sensory receptor cells is to enable us to learn about our environment or detect any sensations. However, information can be received by sensory receptor from outside the body such as touch receptor on the skin or light receptor in the eye.
