    The receptors are the protein molecule which binds to the odour molecules and receives a sense of smell.

    The receptors are embedded in the cilium membranes covered with mucus on which when the odour molecules bind. The binding of the odour molecules triggers the opening of the cation channels which generates the action potential. The action potential is then transmitted to the olfactory bulb in the brain where the signal is analysed.
