Mitochondria are the site of ATP production (the energy currency of the cells) through the process of oxidative phosphorylation.

    Explanation:

Aerobic cellular respiration has three stages. The Kreb's cycle and oxidative phosphorylation take place in mitochondria.

During oxidative phosphorylation, oxidation of NADH and FADH2 by terminal electron acceptor oxygen creates proton motive force. The proton motive force drives phosphorylation of ADP into ATP. The process forms around 32-34 ATPs from one glucose molecule.
