The surface of the villi in the small intestine is covered by a single layer of epithelial cells called enterocytes. Enterocytes absorb nutrients from the intestinal lumen as they move up the side of the villus. The enterocytes are shed from the end of the villus through apoptosis after 3 to 4 days.
