    In the case of humans, this means that parent cells have two chromosomes and gametes have one. All of the gametes in the mother's eggs possess X chromosomes. The father's sperm contains about half X and half Y chromosomes. Germ cells have only half the number of chromosomes as a diploid cell one of each pair - and are termed haploid (n). In a human egg or sperm, there are 23 chromosomes, one of which is an X or Y.
