Atherosclerosis is the hardening of the arteries, and it is the build up of plaques (fatty deposits) on the inside of arteries. The correct sequence:

    a) Damage to the endothelium of an artery. The plaques harden,

thus, blocking the flow of blood in major arteries.

    b) Inflammation occurs and white blood cells enter the damaged site.

White blood cells become congested with fatty deposits.

    c) Fatty deposit called an atheroma is formed on the endothelial lining of

the artery, turning it into hardened plaque. Excess LDL cholesterol

accumulates in the interior of arterial walls.

    d) Macrophages are drawn to this site. Blood Pressure is raised.
