    Mountains are formed in the lithosphere. Litosphere is the solid shell of the planet Earth, which includes the brittle upper portion of the mantle and the crust.

    It extends to a depth of about 60 mi (100 km) and is broken into about a dozen separate, rigid blocks, or plates.
