    Inhalation is the process by which atmospheric air is drawn inside the body.

    It occurs when the intrapulmonary pressure is less than atmospheric pressure.

    It is initiated by the contraction of diaphragm and external intercostal muscles.

    These contractions lift up the ribs and the sternum which increases the thoracic volume.

    Consequently, the pulmonary volume is increased due to which intra-pulmonary pressure becomes less than atmospheric pressure which pulls the air from outside the body to move into the lungs.
