It was derived from the cervical cancer cells taken from Henrietta Lacks. HeLa cells are commonly used in cancer research. These cells are robust and can potentially invade other cultures if care is not taken. (1) These primary cells are not known to harbor an agent recognized to cause disease in healthy adult humans.
