    These groupings are called domains.

A domain is the highest taxonomic rank of organisms. Carl Woese, an American microbiologist, and biophysicist designed the three-domain system which describes that the tree of life consists of three domains: Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukarya. Each of these three domains of life is characterized by rRNA which is unique to them.
