    A square represents a male in a pedigree. A circle represents a female in a pedigree. An unshaded circle represents that the person is not carrying the disease or particular trait which is being studied for the pedigree, A horizontal line is made between the parent who mate to produce the offsprings. A vertical line is made in between the parents and the children to represent the children of the parents in a pedigree.
