Basically, energy and nutrients move through an ecosystem by following the different processes of interactions of the living organisms and the environment. This includes interactions of living organisms to living organisms, the environment to living organisms, the living organisms to the environment, and environment to environment itself. These interactions makes the flow and transfer of energy and nutrients throughout the ecosystem. As energy can't be created nor destroyed, the interactions make infinite paths for energy to be transferred and transformed. As energy is transferred and transformed, nutrients come along with it.
