A pH indicator indicates whether a solution is acidic or basic. Lactose broth fermentation tubes contains lactose broth, phenol red; which is itself a pH indicator. The phenol red indicator is red at a pH greater than 6.8 and it will turn yellow if the pH is lower than 6.8. So that’s why pH indicator is not needed in lactose broth fermentation tubes.
