Determine the net ATP yield of each starting molecule when fully oxidized to CO 2. Assume that glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation are fully active.

    The correct answer is 36-38 ATP

    Explanation:

    The oxidation of glucose starts from the glycolysis process and it get completely oxidized in Krebs cycle in CO2 but most of the energy trapped into reduced form like NADH and FADH2 which are utilized during oxidative phosphorylation to produce most of the ATP.

    Glycolysis - 2ATP and 2 NADH = 6/8 ATP

    Oxydative decarboxylation - 2 NADH = 6 ATP

    Krebs cycle - 6 NADH, 2 FADH2, and 2 ATP = 24 ATP

    So the total ATP produced during respiration is 36 to 38 ATP.
