The early Archean era's environment wasn't favorable for aerobic organisms. The atmosphere then did not have free oxygen for organisms to utilize and the temperature was significantly higher than it is now. The amount of greenhouse gasses present in the atmosphere was also greater than any period in time. The earliest life form, which was the cyanobacteria, survived through photosynthesis.
