    The patient has brain damage in the sensory cortex.

    The nurse tested if he was able to recognize writing on the skin just by the sensation of touch. That ability is called Graphesthesia and a patient with damage in the sensory cortex has impaired sensory perception and thus will not be able to identify the number traced.
