Let us consider a grassland habitat and study the effects of extinction of one of its species.

    Explanation:

Consider the case of a grassland. The commonly found species in a grassland is the grasshopper. Suppose the grasshopper species becomes extinct. The frogs of the grassland form the next trophic level above grasshopper species.

The frogs survive by feeding on the grasshoppers. When the prey species become extinct the predator species' existence becomes difficult. Thus the frog species eventually becomes extinct.

Other species of the food chain that feeds on frogs will then face threat of extinction. Thus the existence of the whole set of organisms in a food chain gets adversely affected.
