These nodules are mostly found in the roots of legumes. They encapsulate and shelter nitrogen-fixing bacteria (Rhizobium) in a symbiotic relationship. These nitrogen-fixing bacteria fix atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia that is available for absorption by the plants. The legumes have developed a mechanism to attract the bacteria using flavonoid signals.
