What would happen if mitochondria were absent?

    The organism would die. The mitochondria converts sugar into energy, and without it the cell would not be able to function.

    Mitochondria break down food and convert it to ATP for the body to use.

    If mitochondria were absent, eating food would be useless, it would not provide nutrition.
