A stroke occurs when there is a blockage of a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain. Because of that, part of the brain can't receive the blood it needs, causing that region to die. Each location of the brain has different functions and if damaged, different symptoms will appear.

If the stroke occurs in the right side of the brain, the left side of the body will be affected (sensation of numbness, tingling). Or, a stroke in the visual cortex may cause loss of vision, etc.
