Which of the statements regarding DNA replication are true? Replication takes place in the5′to3′direction on the leading strand and in the3′to5′direction on the lagging strand. Replication usually takes place in the5′to3′direction. Leading strand fragments (Okazaki fragments) are synthesized semi‑discontinuously and must be joined by DNA ligase. New nucleotides add to the5′phosphate of the growing DNA molecule. Eukaryotic chromosomes have more than one origin of replication.

Replication usually takes place in the5′to3′direction

Leading strand fragments (Okazaki fragments) are synthesized semi‑discontinuously and must be joined by DNA ligase

Eukaryotic chromosomes have more than one origin of replication.

    Explanation:

Option A is incorrect because the leading strand is oriented in 3' to 5' direction i. e towards the replication fork while in a lagging strand it is oriented towards the 5' to 3' direction i. e away from the replication fork

Option D is also incorrect because Nucleotides cannot be added to the phosphate (5') end as polymerase is able to add nucleotide in 5' to 3' direction. Due to this reason, lagging strand is synthesised in fragments.

However, option B, C and E are correct.

DNA chuncks known as Okazaki fragments are added to the lagging strand in the 5' to 3' direction. These DNA fragments are to be added at the end and hence this replication is known as discontinuous replications

Eukaryotic chromosomes are long in size, hence they have more than one origin of replication.
