Any metal, liquid, gas has affinity for oxygen the element will absorb oxygen and gets oxidized. Iron FE has very large affinity for 02. The process is called oxidation. The process of removal of any element from metals through the process of oxidation is called reduction. Carbon is removed from the iron to make steel.
