The main differences between gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria are:

- First, the thickness of the bacterial wall, gram-positive bacteria like S. pyogenes has a thinner bacterial wall, which allows antibiotics to get in the cell easily (like penicillin and aminoglycosides).

- Second, the constitution of the cell wall, gram-positive bacteria do not have lipid constituent, (on the opposite of gram-negative bacteria) which allows to hydrophilic antibiotics to pass easily, but they are a little bit more resistant to detergents like soap alcohol.
