Artificial selection is the process by which humans breed organisms and select the ones from the progeny which have the desired characteristics. For example: drought resistant crops, fruits with more shelf life and more milk producing cows. Heritability is the process by which a trait is passed on from one generation to another. A breeding program aims at passing the desired qualities from the parent generation to the progeny. Without heritability, these qualities would not be passed on to the next generation. So even if the parents had the desired characteristics, these would not be useful in long run since without heritability they could not be assimilated in the next generation. Hence, heritability is really important for the success of breeding programs.
