There are two types of cell division. These are Mitosis and Meiosis.

Mitosis is the process where a cell copies all its DNA and then divide into two new cells. Both new cells has a complete copy of its DNA bundled up as chromosomes.

Meiosis occur on cells that are making egg cells or sperm cells. Each sperm cells or egg cell contains only half of the copy of its DNA from the mother cell.

Where Mitosis retains the full copy of its DNA with 46 chromosomes, Meiosis only retains have of its DNA with only 23 chromosomes.
