Ecological succession is defined as the changing process in the structure of species in the ecological community as time goes by. This process can take place in a span of decades. Take for instance, this can happen after a wildfire. In some other cases, this may take place after a million of years even after a mass extinction.

Frederic Clements in the year 1916 published a theory stating a description of a succession and advanced it as a general ecological concept. His theory had a powerful influence on ecological thought. According to Clements, succession is a process which undergoes different phases. The first phase is the nudation. This is where everything begins wherein there is the development of a bare site. Second is the migration. Propagules arrives in this stage. A propagule is the material needed that is used when an organism propagates to the next stage of their life cycle. Next is the ecesis which gives rise to the establishment and the beginning stage of vegetation. Fourth is the competition phase. In this stage, the organisms compete for space, light and nutrients. This is a sign that the organisms are well established and have grown already. Next phase is the reaction wherein the changes are autogenic. And lastly, stabilization happens. In this phase, a supposedly stable community forms.
