In a population of tomato plants, mean fruit weight is 60 g and narrow-sense heritability is 0.3. Predict the mean weight of the progeny if tomato plants whose fruit averaged 80 g were selected from the original population and interbred.

    Explanation:

    The mean of the population of the tomato weighs 60gms and average weight of plant is 80gms.

    Narrow sense heritability (h2) is 0.30

    Average mean weight of fruit after is given as;

    (narrow sense heritability) = (M2 - mean population) / (average weight - population weight)

    0.30 = (M2-60) / (80-60)

    0.30 (20) = M2 - 64

    6 = M2 - 64

    Collect like terms

    M2 = 64+6 = 70g

    M2 = 70 grams
