The biggest underlying cause of excessive metabolic rate, which is abnormal, is a hyperthyroidism. This is an excess production of the thyroid hormone by the thyroid gland. Thyroid hormone is significant since it acts to increase the basal metabolic rate and therefore essential to proper development and differentiation of all cells of the human body.
