The primary reason surplus carbohydrates in plants are stored as starch is because: the space they occupy as carbohydrates is needed for other macromolecules. if they were left as individual monosaccharides, water would enter the cell by osmosis. all of these choices represent equally important reasons why surplus carbohydrates in plants are stored as starch. they would otherwise be utilized as energy sources even if such energy were not needed at that time. energy is needed in the nucleus, and only starch is capable of being transported into the nucleus.

Carbohydrates are compounds produced during photosynthesis. They have two main purpose in plants. To provide building blocks for structural components and carbohydrates can be use to deliver energy for plants. Throughout the season the carbohydrates are flowing through the plants going from the locations that have an excess supply called sources to locations that needs it called the sink.

The primary reason surplus carbohydrates in plants are stored as starch is because leaving them as individual monosaccharides would upset the osmotic balance of the cell. Polysaccharides are the most abundant carbohydrates. A polysaccharide molecule can contain thousands of glucose units. the highly complex carbohydrates include starches, cellulose, and glycogen. Starch is the usual form in which carbohydrates are stored as energy by plants.

The advantage of storing starch instead of glucose includes; starch do not affect the water concentration inside cells. They do not move away from the storage areas in the plant.
