    Walking appendages into feeding ones

    Explanation:

The successful modification of those feeding appendages arose probably on a basal extinct arthropod like a crustacean organism and the source of modification are part of a gene group called hox genes. Modifications like positive mutations, which are modifications that cause an evolutionary advantage, on those group of genes led to diversity of those appendages.
