When the chromosomes line up on the equatorial plane you can conclude the cell is in metaphase. Metaphase is the third phase of mitosis in which duplicated chromosomes align themselves in the middle of the cell along the equatorial plate of the spindle. The replicated chromosomes which are joined at the centromere are called sister chromatids.
