The nurse should give all the necessary information to the parents of the newborn and emphasize the importance of keeping the cord dry and protected. The diaper should not come in contact with the cord and should be folded just underneath it. In order for the area of the cord to be clean, it should only be cleaned using a wet sponge. After the 10th or 14th-day post-birth, when the cord should naturally fall off, the newborn can be bathed properly in running water. The parents should always watch for symptoms of infection such as a red and moist cord or intense smell and uncommon discharge.
