    Amoeba and phytoplankton differ in that phytoplankton can perform photosynthesis.

    Phytoplankton contain chlorophyll and thus have the ability to utilize photosynthesis to make their own food using energy from sunlight. These organisms are the primary producers and therefore form the basic foundation of the food chain in the ocean ecosystem.
