The amount of air that is generally ventilated in a breath is referred to as the tidal volume. The symbol for this is VT or TV and it is basically the volume of the lung which represents the average amount of air that is inhaled and exhaled with no extra effort applied. In a healthy young adult, this is approximately 500 ml for ever breath in, or roughly 7 ml per each KG of body mass.
