    Answer: Many scientists think that early aerobic prokaryotes invaded larger cells and eventually gave rise to mitochondria.

    Explanation: The scientists observed that the membranes of chloroplast and mitochondria had resemblances to the cell membrane of the free living prokaryotes. There were two hypotheses which were proposed from this. The first proposal was that mitochondria have evolved from the endosymbiotic prokaryotes which were able to photosynthesize their own food. The mitochondria as well as the chloroplast had several common features with the free living bacteria like their ribosomes are similar in size and structure and the means of reproduction is binary fission. These similarities between the bacteria and the organelles of the eukaryotic cells provide evidence of the ancestry and the fact that mitochondria has evolved by prokaryotic invasion of larger cells.
