Bacteria can be identified by their morphological characteristics, biochemical characteristics, molecular characteristics or the combination of some or all the processes.

Morphological and biochemical characteristics can sometimes give a false-positive result and hence, are not as accurate as molecular characteristics. The later has to do with determining the sequence of nucleic acid of the bacteria and comparing it to an already established standard gene library.
