What is the significance of meiosis in gametogenesis?

    Meiosis is how sex cells or gametes are made. It enhances genetic variation and hybrid vigor in the offspring as a result of processes such as crossing-over and independent assortment which occurs during meiosis.

    Explanation; Gametogenesis is the process of Meiosis and cyto-differentiation that converts germ cells into mature male and female gametes. Meiosis is a type of cell division occurring only in germ cells, involving 2 meiotic divisions, giving rise to haploid cells from diploid cells. Meiosis is a significant process during sexual reproduction as it generates genetic variation in offspring because the process randomly shuffles genes across chromosomes and then randomly separates half of those chromosomes into each gamete.

    Meiosis is important in gamete production, which are required for sexual reproduction in organisms. Meiosis does not only produce gametes, but also brings variation in the offspring. These vaiations are basis of evolution.
