First degree burns only damage the epidermis. This could cause the skin to lose their protective effect. One of the important function of the skin is to prevent the loss the water and prevent infection.

The damaged epidermis can loss water molecule, makes the patient prone to dehydration.

The skin also at risk for infection as the bacteria can easily grow and damage the skin.
