A mammary gland consists of 15 to 20 lobes or compartments. These mammary lobes are separated by a variable amount of adipose tissue. Each mammary lobe is composed of several smaller compartments called lobules. Lobules, in turn, are composed of a group of milk-secreting alveoli. However, the mammary gland is not fully developed in the breasts of non-pregnant women and they have their breasts mostly composed of adipose and connective tissues.
