When a clot forms elsewhere, breaks free, then lodges in the brain, it is called an embolic stroke. It is also called an ischemic stroke. When the clot lodges in the brain, it causes a stroke which is what happens when blood flow to the brain is reduced or cut off. Sometimes the clot can form in the aorta, which is the largest artery in the body.
