Consumer is the basic category of the ecosystem. They can be plants and animals. Consumer in case of plants consumes light energy and CO2, consumers like herbivorous (animals) consume plants, consumers like omnivorous consume plants and animals. In case of heterotrophs, they are dependent on other living organisms.
