    I can determine this is talking about a type of dog because canis comes from canidae. Scientists don't use common names to identify organisms in order to make sure that any scientist, no matter his or her mother tongue, can identify the organism.

    Canis is latin for canine, so you can assume that the organism in of the canine species. Lupus is a latin base for Luna, and luna means moon. The organism being described is the Grey Wolf. This is called bionomeclature. The information you can gather from a scientific is the generic name and the specific name.
