The answer B. New, more adaptable species flourish, replacing the extinct species.

When comes to the catastrophes or environmental changes, some species will die because they cannot adapt to the newly formed environment. Those are usually species that can survive only in a very narrow environmental factors. But, some species are able to adapt to the new situation. These species are more adaptable so it is expected they will replace the extinct species.
