Henrietta Lack was a cervical cancer patient. In the course of her treatment, her doctors collected cells from her body for investigation. This was done without her knowledge. These cells were cultured in the laboratory in order to understand their mechanism of division. The cells have been used for many research purposes since then and neither Henrietta Lack nor her family has ever been compensated financially for the use of the cells.
