    The answer is; C

When Mendel coined his law of hereditary, he did not know about genes. He nonetheless observed that offsprings receive one discrete unit of a basic trait from each of the parents. He also observed that genes on different chromosome were inherited independently of each other. This principle was named law of independent assortment.
