    The correct answer is B (hundreds of thousands) when accounting for factors such as transportation and household energy consumption.

    Explanation:

    Early hominids harnessed about 2,000 calories per person per day, and this number has only increased since, to about 230,000 per person per day in contemporary industrial society (!)

    That's it. That's the answer. Anyone saying it's D/thousands is wrong bc that's only based off food consumption. The majority of kilocalories consumed by a contemporary person are energy-related.
